How to Find a Hobby

Finding a hobby isn’t difficult, but I can’t give you the answer on how to find the perfect hobby for you as it all depend on YOU!

What are your interests?

Now, you can say (like many)

“But I don’t have any interests, that’s why I’m here.”

Not totally true. Sure, you’re here to try and figure out the puzzle of finding a hobby, but you do have interests.

How can you find your interests exactly?

The internet. We spend an abundunt of time on our phones. Look at accounts you are following, pictures you are liking & sharing on social media, look at the reels, tiktoks, or YouTube videos you might sit and watch and feel calm doing so.

These are things you may be interested in.

An example, if you’re always liking & sharing crochet pictures and following crochet accounts, go to your local craft store, buy yarn and a crochet hook, and just start practicing crochet stitches. Make a small crochet project, and share it with your friends. When you share something you’ve made, it boosts your self-esteem and you’ll want to make more.

Try New Things

Sometimes, all it takes is jumping out and trying a few things.

I don’t blame you if you don’t want to spend a bunch of money on a hobby you may not enjoy. Check out Facebook Marketplace listings or even Kijiji for things you may need to try out your hobby.

For example, in my area for the crafting community, there are so many different Facebook groups that other free trades or selling craft supplies for a very good deal. This is great for beginners or people who aren’t sure what they want to do. Go to the thrift store, you may find some good options there too!

You may need to try a few different things and see what you enjoy. Don’t give up on something within the first few days, if you’re brand new at it you’re not going to be amazing at it. However, with lots of practice and perseverance, you can achieve what YOU want out of your hobby… you just HAVE to work towards it.

I can promise you that the feeling of finishing something you accomplished, being proud, and sharing it with others will boost your confidence and you’ll feel SO good that you’ll excited to make another.

Because hobbies make you feel good.

Bring Back Childhood Hobbies

By far the BEST tip I can give is bringing back old hobbies you did in your childhood or even as a teenager.

Doing a hobby you enjoyed when you were younger, will make you feel more knowledgeable on the topic.

Not only that, you’ll feel young again. I know some of us may not have had an ideal childhood, but for myself, I did all my hobbies with my grandmother, so when I pick up my hobbies I feel more connected with her.

If your childhood hobby was knitting, find some knitting needles and yarn and make a small project.

Craft supplies. Sewing machine, crochet hooks, yarn, embroidery, cross stitching, and knitting

Maybe grab a book from your local library to read instead of buying if your hobby growing up was reading. This way, you are given a deadline to finish the book & you don’t need to spend money on a book that might just sit on your shelf.

I know a lot of us learned how to make friendship bracelets or keychains as kids. Start making some for yourself, friends, and family.

In my own experience, I brought back childhood hobbies and it was the best choice for me.

Time to find your hobby!

Learning a new hobby isn’t difficult, it’s quite easy actually. It’s the sticking-to-it part that tends to be more difficult for a lot of people. However, when you find the time and recognize just how beneficial a hobby will be for your mental health, you’ll get it all figured out.

I know I’ve said it a few times here already, but one benefit of doing a hobby is the self-esteem & confidence boost it has to offer. When you finish for example a handmade crafted piece, and you share it with friends and family, whether it’s gifting it or even just sharing a picture on social media, the feedback I guarantee you, will be amazing.

Not only will you be incredibly proud of which will boost your self-esteem & confidence already, but then sharing with others will boost it even more!

Please, just don’t give up.

I know so many people who were interested in one thing, they did it, and they were way too hard on themselves because it didn’t turn out how they expected. The end result was them giving up.

This is NOT the answer.

Please, do not compare yourself to people online. If you are JUST starting a hobby, you are not going to be perfect. Comparing yourself to someone who has been doing this hobby for years, maybe even decades is not the right mindset. Just do not compare yourself AT ALL. Use the people online as inspiration for your hobby. Chances are too that if you know them and you share your project with them, they will be SO proud of you!

You will never get to where you want to be by giving up.

Believe in yourself, take the time, practice, and I promise you’ll be having a time with your new hobby before you know it.
