How to Thread A Sewing Machine & Wind a Bobbin

Sharing is caring!

Before you can begin to start sewing with your machine, you must prep it. Winding up a bobbin and threading your sewing machine are the most important steps to do in order to start sewing!

As a beginner, you feel overwhelmed when looking at your machine and seeing all these mechanical pieces and numbers. Sure, a manual does guide you through threading but what;s even better than looking at a manual, is looking at real pictures of the threading and winding!

Plus, sewing machines can be pricy. Purchasing a sewing machine secondhand is not uncommon, and sometimes they don’t come with instructions.

This guide is to help anyone, no matter how you need the help. Maybe you need more visual and written instruction or perhaps you lost your manual. I am here to help!

How to Wind a Bobbin

The first thing you must do BEFORE threading your machine is winding up a bobbin.

But what? What’s a bobbin?

Whats a Bobbin?

A bobbin is what contains your thread in the bottom of your sewing machine.

How the bobbin is inserted in your machine can be different amoungest machines. For example, I old machine had a bobbin case which then the bobbin case was then inserted into the machine.

In my current machine, I can place my bobbin right into my machine, just need to remove the cover latch.

Winding your bobbin in your machine

To wind your bobbin, you first need to ensure that the bobbin will work for your machine. Some machines may only take different material like plastic or metal. Some other may take certain shapes like more curved or flat.

My old machine, the simple singer, which is a very basic beginner machine that I got as a child, would take either a more curved bobbin or flat.

My current machine can only take the flat-edged bobbin.

How to wind a bobbin

To start winding your bobbin, you need a spool of thread inserted on the ___. Once you have your thread there, following the numbers on your machine that are dotted, we are going to bring the thread along.

Inserting bobbin into sewing machine

In some cases, your machine might have a case for the bobbin. I unfortunately no longer own my old sewing machine, so showing how to insert the bobbin in the machine with the case on, I unfortunately can’t show.

However, linked below is easy instructions on how to insert your bobbin into your machine when you have a case for the bobbin.

How to thread a sewing machine

How to thread a sewing machine

Like earlier with the bobbin, for threading your machine you are going to follow the numbers on your machine. Instead of following the dotted line, you’ll follow the solid line instead.

To thread your thread through the needle, bring your thread in front of the sewing needle. Taking the automatic threading arm, push down once you have your thread lined up properly to your needle.

The threading arm will grab your thread and pull it through your needle.

Start Sewing

Once you have your bobbin winded and your machine is properly threaded, you are ready to start sewing. Remember to keep sewing projects small & easy in the beginning to avoid becoming discouraged.

And don’t expect perfection when you’re a beginner. You’re a beginner. But I promise with lots of practice, you’ll excel in this hobby!

Happy Sewing!
